In today’s world, you only get paid if people are using your product.

Great web-based TV network that I stumbled across and have been enjoying lately.  I really like the Venture Capital and the Startup shows.  Great content/discussions and interesting guests from the tech world.  Recommended.

Pure awesome.

Display A Blip.tv Video In A PrettyPhoto Lightbox

Blip.tv video in a PrettyPhoto lighbox

PrettyPhoto has built in support for videos, and can already handle YouTube & Vimeo out of the box.  However on the new DAXKO Connect website, we wanted to use blip.tv to host our videos, and I figured out a way to easily show the video in a PrettyPhoto lighbox.

Here’s how you can do it, too.

1) Go to the episode dashboard on blip.tv for the video you want to show in the PrettyPhoto lightbox.

2) In the Embed section on the right, choose the player you want to use then copy the URL in the “src” parameter (not the whole <embed/> code).  It should be something like “http://blip.tv/play/xxxxxxxxx”

3) Paste the URL you copied in step into a new browser window.  It should redirect to another URL and your video should start playing.  This is the URL you’ll use for the PrettyPhoto lighbox link.  Copy the entire URL.

4) Use PrettyPhoto exactly how the docs describe, and use the link you copied in step #3 as source of the lightbox.  For our DAXKO Connect Whiteboard Video, the code looked like the following example.  (Pro Tip: Add height & width parameters to the end of the video URL to let PrettyPhoto know how to size the lightbox)

The playhouse in its original formSo we sold the playhouse that came with our new home on Craigslist in order to make room for a patio, and because I could never get wife off the slide anymore.  The purchaser showed up with a tow truck to escort the kid fortress back to his land.

Actually getting it onto the truck was going to be epic so I had to record it.  I expected disaster the entire time but it surprisingly worked quite well.

DirecTV Hates New Customers

So we signed up for DirecTV at our new house back in February and overall I’ve really enjoyed it.  You would think that DirecTV would treat their new customers with high regard, but in fact they want to charge you more because you’re new customer if you want to upgrade something.

We’re very interested in the new Whole-Home DVR service so I inquired to see how much it would cost to be turned on and add a new receiver.  Here’s the breakdown:

  • $99 for a new HD receiver (must be HD)
  • $99 “setup” fee for the service, which means they’re clicking a button on my account in their system somewhere.  Awesome.
  • $49 “installation” fee for the guy to come out and do something to our current HD DVR box & satellite.  Why isn’t this just part of the “setup” fee?  Bullshit.
  • $50 NEW CUSTOMER FEE.  That’s right.  Because we’re still considered a “new customer” of DirecTV, they will charge us an extra $50 bucks just because.  DirecTV hates new customers.

While I still think the Whole-Home DVR service would be awesome, we won’t be ordering it today.

No medium has ever survived the indifference of 25-year-olds.

The upcoming overhaul of Virb looks interesting, but I wonder how much control you’ll have over the themes?

Taking forever to order my new #iPhone4 through Apple’s site. Must not be the only one trying..
